Opening reception for exhibition of all photographs in series, with poetry reading and book signing.
Photographer David Johnson and poet Philip Matthews will sign copies of Wig Heavier than a Boot (Kris Graves Projects, 2019) at the NY Art Book Fair. The book, designed by Amy Thompson of Paper Boat Studios, brings together 34 photographs by David and 26 poems by Philip. Revealing Petal—a drag consciousness as whom Philip manifests to write, and David photographs—the project crosses art-making rituals with isolated performances within domestic spaces and pastoral landscapes.
As poets, we go to the page to say something. But what to do when something gets caught in our throat, or when we feel stuck in our habits? Invoking personae can be a powerful means to transform our voice, style, and even subject matter. In this one-day workshop, we’ll explore methodologies to call someone else into the room to help us say the things we can’t say alone. Participants will be guided through meditation, writing, and drawing prompts to surface the persona who’s waiting to work with you. No experience necessary, but please bring your notebook if you have one.
